Chebe Shampoo and Conditioner: A Simple Wash Day Routine for Natural Hair

By Online African Shop Team · Updated October 2026 · 6 min read

Wash day is when most breakage happens: hair is wet, tangled and stretched. A gentle chebe wash day keeps your hair soft from shampoo to seal, so more of your length survives the week.

Why use chebe shampoo and conditioner?

Chebe is a traditional hair powder from Chad, used by Basara Arab women to coat and protect their hair so it breaks less. Chebe shampoo and conditioner bring that idea into a normal wash routine. You still need to cleanse your scalp, but the goal is to do it without leaving your hair stripped, rough and ready to snap.

To be clear, no shampoo or conditioner grows hair. What a gentle wash day can do is cut down on breakage, which is how you hold on to length.

Chebe wash day, step by step

1
10 min · optional

Pre-poo with chebe oil

Section dry hair into 4 to 6 parts. Coat the lengths with chebe oil and finger-detangle gently. This cushions hair so shampoo feels less stripping.

2
5 min

Shampoo your scalp, not your ends

Rinse well with warm water. Massage chebe shampoo into your scalp with your fingertips (not nails). Let the suds run down the length as you rinse; there is no need to scrub your ends.

3
5 to 10 min

Condition and detangle

Shake the chebe conditioner and smooth it through each section, ends first. Detangle slowly with a wide-tooth comb or your fingers, starting at the tips and working up. Leave it on a few minutes, then rinse with cool water.

30 min · weekly

Chebe hair mask (optional)

For extra softness, stir 1 tablespoon of chebe powder into a scoop of conditioner. Apply to the lengths, cover with a plastic cap for 30 minutes, then rinse well.

5
5 min

Pat dry, don't rub

Squeeze out water with an old T-shirt or microfiber towel. Rubbing with a rough towel roughs up the cuticle and causes frizz and breakage.

6
10 min

Leave-in, then seal with chebe oil

On damp hair, apply your water-based leave-in, then a few drops of chebe oil to lock it in. Finish with raw shea butter on very dry ends if you like.

Your choice

Style loosely and protect at night

Braid, twist or band your hair without pulling it tight. Sleep in a satin bonnet or scarf.

Using chebe powder the traditional way? Chebe paste is gritty. Rinse it out with plenty of water before you shampoo, and use your fingers to work out any bits before combing. Our chebe powder guide walks through the full method.

Wash day do's and don'ts

Do

  • Condition every time you shampoo
  • Detangle while hair is soaked in conditioner
  • Work in sections to keep hair from tangling
  • Use cool or lukewarm water to rinse
  • Keep styles loose

Don't

  • Pile all your hair on top of your head to wash
  • Rub hair with a bath towel
  • Rip a brush through dry, tangled hair
  • Use high heat right after washing
  • Leave heavy product buildup on the scalp

These tips follow guidance from dermatologists at the American Academy of Dermatology, who note that curly and coily hair is more prone to dryness and breakage.

Every 2 to 4 weeks Chebe hair mask before conditioning Chebe powder in conditioner

Wash as often as your scalp needs. If you sweat a lot or your scalp gets itchy and flaky, wash more often; very dry hair may do fine with every 7 to 10 days.

Chebe shampoo and conditioner FAQ

Does chebe shampoo help hair grow?

No shampoo grows hair. Chebe shampoo and conditioner help keep hair soft and less prone to breakage, which helps you keep your length.

How often should I use chebe shampoo?

Most people with curly or coily hair wash once a week. Wash more often if your scalp gets oily, itchy or flaky.

Can I use chebe conditioner as a leave-in?

Use a rinse-out conditioner as directed. If you want a leave-in, choose one made to stay in, then seal with chebe oil.

Can I use chebe shampoo on braids or locs?

Yes. Dilute the shampoo with water in a bottle, apply it to your scalp between braids or locs, then rinse thoroughly so nothing is left inside.

Is chebe shampoo safe for color-treated or relaxed hair?

Usually, yes, since chemically treated hair breaks easily and benefits from gentle washing. Patch test first and follow your stylist's advice.
