Vitamin E oil is one of those bottles that seems to live in every bathroom cabinet. People use it on dry patches, rough ends, cuticles and scars. Some of that is backed by good evidence and some isn't. Here's what vitamin E oil really does for your face, hair and scars, how to use it, and who should skip it.
Quick answer: vitamin E oil is a rich moisturizer. It's great for dry skin, dry ends, lips and cuticles, especially mixed into a lotion or shea butter. It is not proven to fade scars, and a small study found it irritated the skin of about 1 in 3 people. Patch test first.
What is vitamin E oil?
Vitamin E is a group of fat-soluble antioxidants your skin already makes use of. Vitamin E oil for skin is usually tocopherol, often blended with a carrier oil so it's easier to spread. Cleveland Clinic describes vitamin E cream or oil as a moisturizer you put on your skin.
Vitamin E oil benefits
| Use | What the evidence says |
|---|---|
| Dry skin, elbows, knees, heels | Good. It's a rich moisturizer that softens dry, rough skin. |
| Dry or brittle hair ends | Good as a sealant, like other oils. |
| Lips and cuticles | Good. A drop softens dry lips and ragged cuticles. |
| Fine lines | May help a little over several months; results aren't guaranteed. |
| Scars | Weak. One study found no benefit for most people, and it can irritate skin. |
| Burns or sunburn | No evidence it helps healing. |
Vitamin E oil for your face
Vitamin E oil is thick, so use it sparingly on your face.
- Patch test first. Dab a little behind your ear or on your inner arm for 2 to 3 days.
- Mix, don't layer. Add 1 or 2 drops to your usual moisturizer instead of using it straight.
- Use at night. It can feel heavy under makeup.
- Skip it if you break out easily. Rich oils can clog pores on acne-prone skin.

Vitamin E oil for hair
- Seal your ends: rub 2 or 3 drops between your palms and smooth over damp ends after your leave-in.
- Boost your butter: stir a teaspoon into whipped shea butter.
- Scalp massage: mix a few drops with a lighter oil (jojoba or olive) and massage your scalp before wash day. Skip this if you have dandruff.
There's no strong evidence that vitamin E oil on its own makes hair grow faster. What it does well is cut dryness and breakage, so you keep the length you grow.
Does vitamin E oil help scars?
This is the big one, and the honest answer is: probably not much. In a study of people with surgical scars, researchers put plain ointment on one half of each scar and vitamin E on the other. In most people, vitamin E made no difference or made the scar look worse, and about a third developed an itchy rash from it. For newer scars, gentle massage with any moisturizer, sun protection and time do more. For raised or dark scars, a dermatologist has better options.
Who should skip vitamin E oil
- People who get a rash, itching or bumps after a patch test.
- Acne-prone or very oily skin, at least on the face.
- Open wounds or fresh burns.
- Anyone with a known vitamin E allergy.
Stop using it if your skin gets irritated. Get help right away for hives or swelling of the face, lips or throat.

Can I put vitamin E oil on my face every day?
If a patch test goes well and you don't break out easily, 1 to 2 drops mixed into your nightly moisturizer is fine for most people.
Does vitamin E oil help dark spots?
There's little evidence that it fades dark spots on its own. Daily sunscreen and proven ingredients work better.
Is vitamin E oil good for natural hair?
Yes, as a sealant for dry ends and mixed into butters. It won't make hair grow faster on its own.
Can vitamin E oil get rid of stretch marks or scars?
Research doesn't show that it does, and it can irritate some people's skin.
Can I use vitamin E oil on my lips?
Yes. A drop on dry lips at night is a common use. Don't swallow it.
