Flakes on natural hair don't always mean a dry scalp. Sometimes it's dandruff, which needs the opposite care, and sometimes it's just product buildup. Treat the wrong one and it gets worse. Here's how to tell them apart.
How to tell the difference
| Dry scalp | Dandruff | Product buildup | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flakes | Small, white, powdery | Larger, greasy, yellow-ish | Waxy, clumpy at the roots |
| Scalp feels | Tight, itchy, dry | Itchy, oily, sometimes red | Coated, heavy |
| Worse when | Cold weather, long gaps between washes with harsh shampoo | Long gaps between washes, heavy oils on scalp | Lots of gel, grease and edge control |
| Helps | Gentle shampoo, moisture | Anti-dandruff shampoo | Clarifying wash |
If it's dry scalp
- Wash every 7 to 10 days with a gentle, moisturizing shampoo. A chebe shampoo and conditioner set is made for 4c hair.
- Rinse with lukewarm, not hot, water.
- Deep condition, then apply a light oil or scalp treatment to the scalp only where it's dry.
- Use a humidifier in winter if your home is dry.
If it's dandruff
Dandruff (often seborrheic dermatitis) is linked to a yeast that lives on oily skin. The American Academy of Dermatology suggests that people with Black hair can use an anti-dandruff shampoo about once a week, leaving it on the scalp for about 5 minutes, then following with a moisturizing conditioner on the lengths. Look for zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide or ketoconazole. Go easy on heavy oils and grease at the roots.
If it's buildup
- Use a clarifying wash every 2 to 4 weeks. Diluted African black soap works for many people.
- Massage with your fingertips or a soft silicone scalp brush; never scratch with nails or combs.
- Use less product at the roots, especially gel and edge control.
When to see a dermatologist
See a doctor if your scalp is red, burning, oozing, has thick scales, or you notice hair loss along with the flakes.
