Hair Breakage vs Shedding: How to Tell, and How to Stop Breakage on 4c Hair

By Online African Shop Team · Updated October 2026 · 6 min read

Seeing hair in your comb doesn't always mean something is wrong. Shedding is normal; breakage is damage. Telling them apart takes 10 seconds, and it changes what you should do next.

50–100Hairs most people shed a day
White bulb= shed from the root
No bulb= broken hair

The 10-second bulb test

Pick up a hair from your comb and look at both ends. A shed hair is long and has a small white or light bulb at one end: it came out from the root. A broken hair is short, with no bulb, and both ends look snapped or blunt.

Shedding Breakage
Length Full length Short pieces
End White bulb at the root end No bulb
Normal? Yes, 50–100 hairs a day No, it's damage
Fix Usually none; see a doctor if sudden and heavy Change your routine
Natural hair that "won't grow" is usually growing fine. It's breaking off at the ends as fast as it grows.

Common causes of breakage on 4c hair

  • Dryness: coily hair is naturally drier and snaps easily.
  • Rough detangling: combing dry hair or starting at the roots.
  • Tight styles and tension, especially around the face and edges.
  • Heat: frequent flat ironing or blow drying on high.
  • Cotton friction at night, often showing as breakage at the crown and back.
  • Old, split ends that keep splitting up the strand.

A simple anti-breakage routine

  1. Wash gently every 7 to 10 days with a moisturizing shampoo, and always condition.
  2. Detangle only when hair is wet and full of conditioner, in sections, ends first, with fingers or a wide-tooth comb.
  3. LOC method: leave-in (liquid), then oil, then cream, to keep moisture in for days. See shea butter for 4c hair.
  4. Seal your ends with a few drops of oil every few days.
  5. Low-manipulation styles like twists for 1 to 3 weeks at a time.
  6. Satin at night: bonnet, scarf or pillowcase.
  7. Trim split ends every 3 to 4 months, a small dusting is enough.

When shedding isn't normal

Sudden, heavy shedding (handfuls, or noticeably thinner hair) a few months after illness, childbirth, stress or a big diet change can be telogen effluvium. Patches, bald spots or a shiny scalp need a dermatologist.

FAQ

Is breakage at the crown normal?

It's common, usually from friction (cotton pillowcases, seat headrests) and dryness. Satin at night and extra moisture help.

Is it new growth or breakage around my face?

New growth is short with a tapered, fine tip; breakage has blunt ends. New growth also shows evenly along the hairline.

Does chebe stop breakage?

Chebe coats and seals the hair, which can reduce breakage, but it doesn't grow hair from the root. See chebe oil for hair.
