Kojic acid soap is everywhere on TikTok, and for good reason: it's one of the few soaps with an ingredient that works directly on dark spots. But used wrong, it can irritate, and on brown and Black skin irritation means new dark marks. Here's how to use it the right way.
What is kojic acid?
Kojic acid comes from fungi used in fermenting foods like sake and soy sauce. In skin care it blocks tyrosinase, the enzyme your skin uses to make melanin. That's why dermatologists list it among ingredients that can help fade hyperpigmentation, usually alongside others like azelaic acid, niacinamide and vitamin C.
What kojic soap can help with
- Dark marks left after acne, bumps and ingrown hairs
- Uneven tone on the body
- Darker knees, elbows, underarms and inner thighs
- Sun spots
It does not change your natural skin color, and it won't fix melasma alone. Melasma needs a dermatologist.
How to use kojic acid soap
- Patch test on your inner arm for 2 to 3 days.
- Start once a day, and only every other day on your face for the first 2 weeks.
- Lather in your hands, apply to the area, and leave the lather on for 30 to 60 seconds.
- Rinse well and pat dry.
- Moisturize with shea butter or a gentle cream.
- Sunscreen every morning, SPF 30+, on any area you're treating. Without it, the sun undoes your progress.
Kojic soap side effects
- Dryness, tightness and peeling in the first weeks
- Redness or stinging on sensitive skin
- Contact allergy in a small number of people
Stop if you get burning, itching or a rash. Don't use it on broken skin, freshly shaved areas or with other strong exfoliants on the same day.
