Walk into any African market and you'll see big blocks of shea butter in ivory, cream and bright yellow. Online, you'll see "raw," "unrefined," "organic" and "Grade A" on almost every jar. Here's what those words really mean, how to tell if your shea butter is the real thing, and when to reach for shea or cocoa butter.

Quick answer: raw unrefined shea butter is pressed from shea nuts and filtered, but not bleached or deodorized. It's ivory to light beige, smells nutty and smoky, and melts on contact with your skin. Bright white, odorless shea is refined. Bright yellow shea is usually colored with borututu root, a traditional West African additive.

Raw vs unrefined vs refined shea butter

Raw / unrefined Refined
Color Ivory, cream or light beige Bright white
Smell Nutty, smoky, earthy Little to none
Texture Firm, can feel a little grainy Smooth and even
Nutrients Keeps more natural vitamins Loses some during processing
Latex Contains trace latex Safer for latex allergies
Best for Dry skin, hair, body butter Sensitive noses, cosmetics

Cleveland Clinic notes that raw shea butter keeps more of its nutrients and is yellow-to-beige, while refined shea is white and loses some of its natural compounds in processing.

White or yellow shea butter: which is better?

Both can be pure shea butter. Ivory or white-cream shea is shea in its natural color. Yellow shea is usually blended with a little root from the borututu tree, a traditional West African addition that gives it the golden color many people grew up with. Choose the one you like. If you want shea and nothing else, go ivory.

How to tell if your shea butter is real

  • It melts on your skin. Real shea softens within seconds of touching warm skin.
  • It smells nutty. A strong perfume smell means something was added.
  • The label has one ingredient: Butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter. No mineral oil, petroleum or fragrance.
  • It's firm at room temperature and soft in a warm room. Very runny or whipped-only jars are often blended with oils.
  • Graininess is normal. Small grains form when shea melts and cools slowly. They melt right away on your skin.

How to use raw shea butter

On your body

Warm a small amount between your palms and smooth it onto damp skin right after a shower. Focus on elbows, knees, heels and hands.

On your face

Use a pea-sized amount at night if your skin is dry. Skip it on your face if you break out easily, since rich butters can clog pores on acne-prone skin.

In your hair

Use it as the last step to seal in moisture on damp hair. Our shea butter for hair guide walks you through the LOC method and a whipped shea recipe.

Shea butter vs cocoa butter

Shea butter Cocoa butter
Comes from Shea tree nuts (West Africa) Cocoa beans
Feel Softer, melts quickly Harder, needs more warming
Smell Nutty Chocolatey
Best for Face, hair, everyday body Very dry body skin, lip balm, soap

Both are rich moisturizers. Shea is the easier everyday pick for face and hair. Cocoa butter is great for very dry body skin and makes a lovely bar soap. One myth to drop: Cleveland Clinic notes that cocoa butter hasn't been shown to prevent or fade stretch marks, despite the marketing.

How to store shea butter

  • Keep it in a closed jar, away from heat and direct sun.
  • Use clean, dry hands or a spoon so water doesn't get in.
  • Raw shea usually keeps well for about a year or more. Toss it if it smells sour or sharp instead of nutty.

FAQ

Is raw shea butter the same as unrefined?

Mostly, yes. Both mean the shea wasn't bleached or deodorized. "Raw" usually means the least processing, sometimes with small bits of nut left in.

Why is my shea butter grainy?

It melted and cooled slowly, which forms small crystals. It's still good. Melt it gently and cool it quickly in the fridge to make it smooth again.

Can I use raw shea butter on my face?

Yes, if your skin is dry. If you're acne-prone, test it on a small area first or keep it to your body and hair.

Is shea butter safe if I have a nut allergy?

Cleveland Clinic says shea butter is generally considered safe for tree nut allergies because it's almost all fat and not the proteins that trigger reactions. Raw shea does contain trace latex, so choose refined if you have a latex allergy.

Does shea butter expire?

Raw shea usually lasts a year or more when stored well. If it smells sour or sharp, replace it.
